NOH: TAKASAGO A Shinto Priest visits Takasago and then Sumiyoshi at the urging of an old couple he meets. They describe the virtues of the evergreen pines of the two shrines which are said to be man and wife and to represent the two great poetic anthologies The Manyoshu and Kokinshu.
Poetry, confirming bonds of love and a closeness to nature, flourishes as the love of a faithful couple does. Often performed at the start of the new year, Takasago, by Zeami, is considered one of the greatest master works of the Noh theatre. |
KYOGEN: ONIGAWARA A Daimyo and his servant admire the architecture of a temple before returning home after a long time in the capital. Suddenly the Daimyo bursts into tears. In alarm his servant asks him what is the matter, to which he replies that the demon-faced tile on the eaves of the temple has reminded him of his wife's expression when she is angry.
Since they are about to go home it is certainly better to laugh than to cry, the servant suggests, and the two go off laughing. |
| NOH: MAKIGINU A man bringing rolls of silk to be offered at the Grand Shrines of Kumano at the order of the Emperor misses the deadline because he stops to admire winter plum blossoms and compose a poem at the shrine of the god Otonashi-no-Tenjin. When the man is seized for his indiscretion a shrine maiden is possessed by the god and speaks in defense of the man's actions and on the value of poetry. The maiden dances and then is released from her possession. |
