NOH: YOSHINO SHIZUKA
Based on incidents from tales of the conflict between clans, The Tale of the Heike, the Noh describes how Shizuka, Yoshitsune's lover and Satoh Tadanobu, a retainer loyal to Yoshitsune, help to gain time for Yoshitsune's escape from the area of the capital. Tadanobu disguises himself as a pilgrim from the capital to learn the mood of the group planning to follow after and catch Yoshitsune if they can, and Shizuka delays their pursuit by dancing for them, reminding them of Yoshitsune’s exploits and loyalty, now called into question, to his brother. |
KYOGEN: BUSSHI
A Country Man sets out to the capital to buy a Buddhist statue for a shrine he has built, but when he arrives, realizes he doesn’t know where to find one or where to find a sculptor to order one from. He starts calling out for a sculptor as he walks along, saying that he wants to buy a statue. A Shyster decides to trick the man by pretending to be a sculptor.
The Country Man agrees to buy a statue but then asks for changes in the pose again and again. The Sculptor, pretending to be a "life-like" statue, gets confused leading to disastrous results. |
NOH: CHORYO
Chang Liang, or Choryo in Japanese, was an important leader who served Han Kao Tsu to successfully create and administer the first Han dynasty in China. He is said to have been loyal, wise, and loved by all. The Noh enacts the legend of Chang Liang's meeting Huang-shi Kung, or in Japanese, Kosekiko, (the Yellow Stone Duke), an immortal who passes on to him the San-lueh, one of the great military treatises, after he has shown his humility and determination by retrieving a shoe that the immortal drops. |
