NOH: HASHI BENKEI 'Benkei on the Bridge' Warrior-priest Musashibo
Benkei is preparing to make his nightly visit to pray at the temple of Junzen-ji when his Servant cautions him, telling him of rumors of a strange changeling who is taking swords from passersby on Gojo Bridge.
At first Benkei considers giving up his usual visit, but then, not wanting to be thought a coward, he decides to confront what ever being it is that has been causing the rumors. At the same time Ushiwaka-maru (the childhood name of tragic hero of the Tale of the Heike, Minamoto no Yoshitsune), disguises himself as a woman and goes to Gojo Bridge to fulfill his pledge to take 1,000 swords. A fast-paced Noh featuring the confrontation between Benkei and Ushiwaka-maru with sword and halberd, this is the first Noh celebrating the saga of the relationship between the boy and man who become master and retainer. |
