NOH: ASUKAGAWA
Tomowaka, young boy whose mother has gone missing, is taken by a man to pray at shrines in Yoshino that they will be reunited. On their way back the they see women planting seedlings in the rice paddies. They stop to watch before crossing the Asuka River. One of the women speaks with them and describes how she experiences the transience of spring through rice planting. Tomowaka recognizes that the woman is, in fact, his mother and the two are happily reunited. |
KYOGEN: SAKO NO SABURO
A hunter named Sako no Saburo meets a Priest and they quickly get into a discussion about the Buddhist precept against taking life. Saburo teases the Priest when he confesses that he likes to eat fish, which could also be considered a sin. When the Priest scolds him, saying that a hunter will be reborn as whatever prey he has killed, Saburo asks if that means he will become a priest if he kills him. The Priest replies that he is protected by the Buddha who is in his heart. This leads to further argument and a play on words so that the two continue on together laughing happily. |
NOH: DAI-EI
A Priest on Mt. Hiei is approached by a mountain ascetic. He tells the Priest that he would like to repay the Priest for saving his life in the past. In fact he is a tengu, or mountain goblin, who was in the form of a crow and being teased by children when the Priest rescued him. The ascetic says he can use his powers of transformation to show the Priest anything he would like to see and the Priest asks to see Shakamuni preaching. Later, though he had been warned not to forget that the scene before his eyes was just an illusion, the Priest falls to his knees in prayer. This brings the god Idaten to appear and scold the tengu, forcing him to show himself in his true form. |
