| NOH: IZUTSU Monogi A Monk visits Ariwara Temple in Nara where the Heian period poet Ariwara no Narihira is buried. He discovers through their conversation that she is, in fact, the spirit of the poet's wife. She later appears in his courtier's hat and robe which she has kept as keepsakes. Based on the Tales of Ise the medival classic of short episodes with accompanying poems that celebrates the life of Ariwara no Narihira, with many of the verses are employed in the text to create a rich embroidery of evocative descriptions of love and the passing of the seasons. |
| KYOGEN: BUSSHI An encounter between a Country Man looking for Buddhist statue for a new shrine he has built and a Shyster leads to comical results when the Shyster pretends not only to be a Busshi, or sculptor of Buddhist statues, but also the statue itself.... |
| NOH: KUROZUKA Yamabushi mountain ascetics are caught at sunset on Adachigahara Plain with no place to spend the night. They persuade a Woman they meet to let them stay at her humble dwelling. She entertains them by showing how she spends her time spinning flax into thread. Later, when then night grows cold, she goes out to gather firewood, warning the priests and their servant to stay away from her bedchamber. The servant is unable to curb his curiosity and peeks into the room. The sight of bodies and gore reveals that they are at the home of the Demon of Adachigahara. She returns and attacks them for betraying her trust but they are able to vanquish her through the power of their religious training. |
